OUR HISTORY

Charles Page: A Legacy of Compassion & Community Building

Charles Page was a pivotal figure in the early history of Oklahoma and Tulsa, leaving an indelible mark through his unwavering dedication to helping others. His most enduring contribution was the creation of the Sand Springs Home for orphans and widows, a testament to his lifelong dream of supporting those in need. To further this vision, he founded the city of Sand Springs, ensuring a strong community backbone for the home.

Arriving in Tulsa during the oil boom at the turn of the century, Charles faced numerous challenges, including multiple oil well failures. His perseverance paid off in 1905 when a discovery well produced 2,000 barrels per day, marking his first million-dollar success. Another significant achievement came with striking natural gas in the Glenn Pool field.

Charles’s empathy was deeply rooted in his own experiences. He remembered vividly how his mother struggled in poverty after the death of his father. This personal history fueled his dream of creating a planned community where widows and orphans could thrive and become productive members of society. His commitment was exemplified when he rescued twenty-one orphans from a defunct children's home in Tulsa, which led to the establishment of the Sand Springs Children’s Home.

Charles Page passed away from influenza on December 27, 1926, but his legacy lives on. The main street of Sand Springs is aptly named "Charles Page Boulevard," serving as a lasting connection between Sand Springs and Tulsa, where it becomes West Third Street. Opel Moss, who knew Charles Page well, serves as a living testament to his legacy. At 103 years old, she continues to share stories of his profound impact, having been one of the children he helped.

Charles Page’s life and work continue to inspire the community, reminding us of the power of compassion and the lasting difference one person can make.
